Privacy policy

Privacy policy for Charted.

Charted is a personal travel journal published by Mihail Duchev. For privacy questions or requests, email support@chartedapp.net.

Your travel journal

Charted stores marked places, visits, dates, notes, trips, wishlists, custom places, collections, preferences and attached photos on your device. The core journal requires no account and has no advertising or analytics service. Your journal leaves the device only when you choose export, sharing or a sync service described below. Feature availability depends on your app version; the newer full-backup, photo-import and paired-sync features may first appear in testing builds.

Optional location

If you enable country suggestions, Charted requests your location while the app is in use. It compares the location with bundled country boundaries on your device and suggests a country for you to mark. Charted does not keep a location history or run background location tracking. You can turn suggestions off in Charted or revoke location permission in system settings.

Photos and exports

The system photo picker lets you select individual photos. Charted copies selected images into its private device storage. When you choose to build travel history from photos, Charted reads the dates and available location metadata of only those selected images on your device, proposes places and dates, and asks you to review them before saving. It does not scan your photo library in the background. Photos are excluded from the ordinary records-only JSON export and CloudKit/Google Drive sync. The separately labelled full backup includes photo bytes, captions and supported records. Your operating system may also include local app data in device backups or transfers according to your account settings.

You choose whether to export a records-only JSON journal, a full backup with photos, a static image or an animated story. Recipients and services you select then receive that file under their own terms. Exports can contain visit notes and travel dates; check the file before sharing it publicly. Deleting a file in Charted does not delete copies you previously shared.

Optional cloud sync

Apple versions can synchronize journal records through the private CloudKit database in your iCloud account. Android can synchronize them through the private app-data folder in your Google Drive account. Sync transfers marked places, visits, notes, dates, trips and supported preferences to Apple or Google over encrypted connections. Newer builds also restore counting rules, themes, appearance and supported map labels, pins, legends and custom colors across devices. Each preference is reconciled separately so changing one choice does not replace every setting. Notification delivery, permission choices, sign-in credentials, purchase entitlements and transient map/navigation state stay device-specific. Charted reads and merges those records on your devices. This Apple/Google sync does not send them to a developer-operated server. Photos are excluded. Custom coordinates and other supported journal records are included.

Google authorization is limited to the app-data scope; Charted does not browse your ordinary Drive documents. Google user data is used only to provide journal synchronization. Charted's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Turn sync off in Charted to stop subsequent sync requests. Revoking access alone may leave stored cloud data. Use your iCloud storage controls or Google Drive's Manage apps controls to remove Charted's cloud data, and revoke the app's Google access in your Google Account if desired. Disable sync on your other devices before removing cloud copies, so a device does not upload its journal again. Apple and Google control retention of their backups and service records.

Optional paired sync and trip links

Newer versions offer a separate optional paired-sync account that transfers a full backup between Apple and Android devices. The Charted service is operated by Mihail Duchev on Cloudflare. It stores the latest uploaded journal and photos, a random account identifier, a hash of the pairing secret, a revision number and the trip snapshots you choose to share. Journal content can include precise custom coordinates, visited places, dates, notes, travel plans, captions and photos. It is used to synchronize your devices and provide your selected shared snapshots, not for advertising or profiling. HTTPS protects transfer; the service can read the content and this is not end-to-end encryption.

The pairing key grants access to the account and is saved locally in Keychain on Apple or encrypted with Android Keystore. There is no email/password account or password recovery. Keep the key private. If you configure a different HTTPS service, its operator receives the data and its own policy applies. Cloudflare may process network and security information such as IP addresses and request times under its service terms. The application does not enable request-content logging or analytics.

A shared trip link gives anyone who holds it access to the selected snapshot. You choose whether to include dates, notes, captions and selected photos. Other trips, wishlists and collections are excluded. Links are snapshots; later journal edits do not change them. Revoke a link in Backup and connected devices to stop future access. Saved copies held by recipients cannot be recalled.

The current backup is retained until replaced or the account is deleted; shared snapshots remain until revoked or the account is deleted. Disconnecting a device does not delete remote data. Use Delete cloud account in Backup and connected devices to delete the server backup, all shared snapshots and the pairing key; this leaves your local journal intact. The same deletion is available at the account deletion page with your pairing key. Provider-managed recovery and security records follow Cloudflare retention rules. Without a pairing key, contact support about a deletion request; because accounts have no email identity, we may be unable to establish ownership.

Maps and purchases

The bundled flat maps and Android globe work locally. The Apple 3D globe uses Apple Maps imagery and services, which can make network requests to Apple. Apple handles those requests under its privacy policy. Purchases and restoration use Apple's App Store or Google Play; those services process payment and purchase information under their own policies. Charted receives product and entitlement information to unlock Pro. We do not receive your payment-card details. The Google Play Billing library sends Google billing-operation diagnostics, including app and operating-system versions, device model and network information, to operate and improve its service. Other platform services process information under their provider policies.

Website, viewer and support

The public Charted website at https://chartedapp.net does not include advertising, analytics scripts or a contact form. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which may process ordinary delivery and security information, including IP addresses, browser information, requested URLs and request times. Provider processing and retention follow the applicable service configuration and Cloudflare's privacy policy: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/. These website requests are separate from your app's travel journal.

The web viewer reads a JSON file you choose inside your browser. Its application code does not upload the journal to us or the host. A sample journal is fictional. Clearing the page removes the loaded journal from the viewer's memory; downloaded files remain wherever you save them.

If you email support, we receive your email address, message and anything you attach. Do not send a complete journal or personal photos unless needed for your request. We use support correspondence to answer and investigate your request and retain it only while necessary for support and applicable recordkeeping obligations. Ask us to delete it when it is no longer needed.

Your choices and rights

You can edit and delete journal entries in the app, export your records, disable sync, revoke permissions or remove the app and its local data. Device backups, cloud copies, exports and recipients' copies require separate removal. Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict personal information we hold, or complain to your data-protection authority. Contact the email above about information in support correspondence. Contact Apple, Google or your hosting provider about information they hold independently. Charted does not sell personal information or use it for cross-service advertising.

Children and changes

Charted is a general-audience travel journal and is not specifically directed to children. A parent or guardian can contact us about personal information sent to support. Store age ratings are determined by the store questionnaires and local rules.

We will update this policy when data practices change and revise its effective date. Material changes that require consent will be presented before the affected feature is used.
